Sparkling Hill - Charge your Batteries for the Holiday Season

A local spa holiday in early December is a nice way to charge up your batteries before the hectic holiday season. Vernon BC is the location of the Swarovski Crystal infused, European Spa and Resort, Sparkling Hill.

I awoke from a nap on our 5 hour road trip as we drove into the grounds of the resort property. The trees were dusted with frost, I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was not still dreaming. It looked like we entering into Rivendell (for those who are familiar with Lord of the Rings, for those who aren’t it was a mystical winter paradise). The resort is located on the top of a hill overlooking Okanagan Lake and the Monashee Mountains. As I entered the lobby I was in awe, Swarovski Crystals were everywhere. At first I was unsure if this opulence was quite my style but after spending a few hours experiencing the resort I enjoyed  seeing the Crystals in all corners of the resort.

We checked into our lake view room. The rooms are spacious and of course infused with crystals. We then dined at Peakfine, their restaurant on property. With sweeping views of the lake, Peakfine is a perfect place for those Romantic dinners! The food has a local inspiration, taking pride in the agriculturally rich land nearby.

After dinner it was time for the Kur Spa. What I had been looking forward to all day. In the Kur Spa, there is an indoor & outdoor pool, hot tub, cold and hot Kniepp Spa Walk, different themed hot sauna and steam rooms and the famous cold sauna (110 C below).

I love going between the hot sauna and steam rooms and the igloo chill room. This change in temperature stimulates circulation and drainage of the lymphatic system. My two favourite steam rooms were the salt steam and the rose steam. I felt both were very helpful for clearing my sinuses. In addition to the steam and sauna room’s there are experience showers. These shower make you feel like you are in the tropics caught in a warm rain downpour, a cold thunderstorm with lightning or a misty jungle. If you spend your evening in the spa as I did, I must bring to your attention that 9-10pm is European hour, swim suit attire is optional!

Now for the main event….the cold sauna! Kur Spa offers a Cryotherpy sauna measuring in at -110 Celsius. This cold sauna at Sparkling Hill is the only one located in North America. The concept was created for people suffering with inflammatory conditions. The creators of the cold sauna wanted the benefits of ice baths but to have that experience without sitting in the ice water for 15 minutes. The sauna is a dry cold which changes the skin temperature but does not have impact on our core temperature. For those dealing with arthritis it is recommended to have 2 sessions a day for 5 days in a row. If you are only going to have one session your system still reaps the benefits. The process of the cold sauna includes wearing a bathing suit, socks and closed toed shoes, mittens and a surgical face mask. You stay in the -110 Celsius chamber for 3 minutes. You are asked to walk around and move your body slowly. Afterwards, you are directed to let your body warm up on its own with no use of outside heating sources for example drinking tea or submerging yourself in a hot tub for at least one hour after.

I highly recommend finding a spa in your local area. Even if it is a day spa, the benefits of taking time for yourself before the holiday season are insurmountable. Go ahead and treat yourself!

Staying Healthy While Travelling

The act of travelling is a stressor to the body even if the end destination is a private island in the South Pacific! We are forced out of our daily routine as we do not have all our usual personal creature comforts. Flying takes a hit on our physical body & mental state of mind. For some people emotions of anxiety or fear are present. This impacts our sympathetic nervous system, releases cortisol and wakes up our fight or flight response. The blood is then forced away from our digestive system and sent to our muscles. There is the addition of either plane food or no food at all, not enough fluids and lack of physical movement. Depending on the length of flight I recommend purchasing one or two large water bottles to consume during your flight. We tend to be unaware of how dehydrated we become while flying. I also recommend being prepared and taking healthy snacks packed from home. This prevents caving into buying the overpriced airport food.

If these tips are not enough to prevent the much dreaded temporary travel constipation then it is important to pack your own natural treatment. Personally, I take ginger tea, mint tea and licorice tea every time I travel. During travel days I am not eating as much roughage as I usually do and I find my system slows down as a result. If that doesn’t help then I seek out fresh papaya. However, I am aware that we are not always travelling to a destination that provides this. It is imperative to know your own body and what makes you feel best!
Flying also can affect our immune system’s integrity. We are in a confined area and sometimes there are others around us who are sick. In association with what I wrote above I believe our digestive system is a main contributor to our immune function. I always take probiotics, all the time, not just when I travel. Secondly, I bring with me Oscillococcinum. It is a homeopathic remedy that combats flu symptoms & quite effectively I might add. I also bring oil of oregano in case I feel a sore throat coming on. Echinacea, vitamin C and astragalus are other options for general immune system boosting. However, it is important to only take Echinacea when you have already experienced symptoms not as a general boost. Finally I like to bring my reshi mushroom tincture with me when I travel as it is a great immuno- modulator
I travel with a little herbal apothecary filled with my favourite remedies and it has kept me safe traveling through North America, Asia, India and South America!

The Enchantment Resort & Mii Amo Spa - ARIZONA

Mii Amo Spa has been voted the best destination spa in North America, Mexico and Caribbean by Conde Naste for two years in a row, and it is easy to see why. Located in Sedona, Arizona the Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo Spa has a special transformative energy about it. In Sedona, there are 4 energy vortexes and one of them is located on property. The Resort is nestled handsomely into the red rocks and therefore outdoor activities are plentiful in the area. There are hiking trails accessed on the property, mountain biking trails located nearby, tennis courts, outdoor swimming pools, croquet, pitch & putt and even hula hooping. In addition to all these activities one can do on property, guests can take excursions to the Grand Canyon, the mining town of Jerome or learn about the history of Sedona with the famous Pink Jeep Tours.

The spa at Enchantment Resort is named Mii Amo which means “journey”. Mii Amo can be access by the Enchantment guests or guests can choose to immerse themselves in their own 3, 4 or 7 night journey to health and wellness. Because all guests of the destination spas have different goals for their visit such as
relaxation, wellness, healing or specific learning objectives this Sedona Spa getaway has created different journeys that individually address the guest’s specific goals. The Mii Amo journeys include accommodation in one of 16 casitas separate from the Enchantment Resort, breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Mii Amo CafĂ©, access to all the same activities as the Enchantment resort and 2 spa treatments daily. Mii Amo has a wide variety of spa services inspired by the natural setting and rich wisdom from the Native American traditions such as red rock massages, Watsu, Ayurvedic Consultations, Cranial-sacral treatments, Sedona clay wraps and much more! In addition to physical treatments, Mii Amo has many mindfulness focused treatments such as compassionate communication, releasing stress, past life regression and vision board creating. Mii Amo has a constantly changing menu of intriguing workshops and events to keep the guests feeling their best and living their happiest healthiest life!

Make it an Active Holiday

Cross Country skiing is a sport that most people can learn at anytime. Anyone, regardless of their age or stage of life can enjoy the benefits. It improves your balance, keeps you aerobically fit, it works all the large muscle groups in your body while it helps you stay mobile and active. The sport has long been popular with all ages as it is easy on the joints, with no impact and little risk of hurting yourself. In other words it is perfect lifetime sport. There are two types of cross country skiing: classic skiing which is what most people think of when they think of cross country skiing and skate skiing which is a newer version of nordic skiing. While both types of skiing improve your fitness and help you stay fit for life they come with their own benefits. I recommend starting by learning to classic ski and add skate skiing as you become more proficient and comfortable on the snow.

An additional benefit of cross country skiing is that it can improve your conditioning for other sports. Cross country skiing is the ultimate cross training if you like to run, cycle, row or hike in the summer. Cyclists and rowers have long been known to use the cardiovascular benefits of skiing to improve their fitness over the winter. Cross country skiing also has added benefits for cyclists as it strengthens upper body and core muscles, something that cycling doesn't do. If you enjoy cycling and maybe have a Granfondo as a goal for 2013, then cross country skiing is a great way to start improving your fitness before cycling season officially begins.

What is a Wellness Travel Consultant?

My name is Jessica Renshaw and I am a Wellness Travel Consultant. By trade I am a Kinesiologist, personal trainer, raw food chef and adventure seeker. I have now combined my passions of family, health, adventure and travel into one career. I work in the family business, a luxury travel agency, originally started by my Grandfather in 1958. My father, Don, runs the business and currently my sister, Carly, and I are learning the business too! We also cannot forget Mom, Dianne, who works in the accounting department. Most people when they hear the  career title Wellness Travel Consultant they want to know more, so let’s take a closer look. Health/wellness is one of my core values but what really does wellness mean?
Wellness for me is doing things I love everyday with people I love (whether those are people I have known for years or a new friend I just connected with!). It is learning new things and exposing myself to new cultures and practices. As well it incorporates feeling physically and mentally strong through good nutrition practices, cardiovascular and weight bearing exercise and relaxation time. Travel is a big part of wellness for me because it allows that necessary break from my everyday habits and reminds me to take time out of the busy societal rat race to PLAY! Sometimes we (as society members) get stuck in old patterns. These old patterns that do not serve us anymore may be found in our relationships with others, the relationship with ourselves, and in our working environment. Typically, it is not until we are unhappy or have a degenerative disease that we take the time to ask ourselves why? I like to be proactive and pose the question to everyone, “what makes you happy”....ok now do it! Wellness is a subjective term and will mean different things to different people. I am here to be your guide and to collaborate on making your travel and wellness goals come true! By studying kinesiology, coaching sports, attending yoga conferences and nutrition lectures and reading books upon books about health I have formed a supportive network of experts in the health field. And by joining the family business, Renshaw Travel, I have a global network of travel professionals and services at my fingertips.

In terms of planning a wellness centred trip with me the possibilities are endless but here are a few things that might spark your interest:

1.      Glamping: Glamping is “Glamorous Camping”; five star camping in remote wilderness destinations.

2.      Active Adventure Holidays: See your favourite destinations in world by foot, bicycle, kayak, river raft or scuba dive.

3.      Relaxation, detox and yoga retreats: Take a much needed break from your 9-5 business regime and work on yourself!

4.      Educational Tours: Learn a new language or new skill that you just haven’t had the time to do.

5.      Bucket List Holidays: How about doing that African Safari, Galapagos Islands Tour or Antarctica Cruise you have been dreaming about?
Renshaw Travel is located in the heart of Kitsilano at 2175 w 4th (just west of Lululemon and east of Semperviva). I am at the office everyday and welcome anyone who wants to come in and chat travel or you can contact me at jessica@renshawtravel.com.
